The area that houses the most central and famous square, on walking distance from Plaza Mayor. Circular in shape, it is an excellent area to stay in due to the many hotels and apartments in the area. On the south side of the square, you can find one of the most iconic buildings in Madrid, known as the Real Casa de Correos, now the headquarters of the President of Madrid’s Autonomous Community. The clock at the bell tower gathers many people at New Years Eve looking to celebrate the New Year with a bang. Fireworks shows here are grand and a live coverage is always broadcasted. On the other side of the square, you can find the “El Oso y El Madroño” which is used to celebrate La Liga Championships of Atletico de Madrid Futbol Club. Puerta del Sol is a vibrant part of the city – filled with bars, restaurants and shops. International clothes shops reside in this area and within minutes of walking you will find yourself in other districts like Calle de Alcalá, Calle Mayor, and Calle Preciados. Next to the modern shops, it is one of the few areas that still has old and historic shops selling traditional goods. Like so many parts of Madrid, it has something for every kind: locals, traveler and tourist. Absolutely worth the stay and visit!
