The Parque del Retiro, which actually literally means “The Park of the Pleasant Retreat”, is known as one of the largest parks in the city of Madrid. It was originally the property of the Spanish Royal House, however in the late 19th century it became a public park opened to all who want to gaze at its beauty. The area, located at the edge of the city center, is close to the Prado Museum and popular amongst locals and tourist. The park itself has many beautiful sculptures, monuments, galleries and even a lake where many gather to picknick in the summer months. Next to the many pieces of art, the area has many beautiful gardens that are under constant maintenance and thus guarantee a beautiful diversity of flowers and trees. Besides coming here for some peace, there are also several activities. During the summer months, every Sunday concerts are given near Calle de Alcalá. Additional, an annual Book Fair is organized. Take a rowboat in the summer or visit one of the puppet shows performed by one of the street artists. The Parque del Retiro area has something to offer for both the active and relaxing visitor and will make sure that you will come back to the area.
