El Born is part of the Ciutat Vella or old city part of Barcelona. This is the part where the original roman fort of Barcino was founded more than 2 centuries ago and people have lived here ever since. Much of the layout today, though some parts being rebuilt and renovated, is still as it was built in medieval times. This planning makes El Born an extremely cozy and atmospheric place with small narrow streets, hidden cozy placas and medieval buildings and churches. In El born you can even still find some preserved century old ruins next to medieval castles walls which again lies next to futuristic buildings. One of El Born’s most famous sights is the Santa Maria Del Mar church, the church on which Ildefonso Falcones based his famous novel Cathedral of the Sea. Even though the novel is partly fictional, which they will also explain you about on the surprisingly cheap tour of the church (including fantastic views from the roof!) they also sell it in the church. Not as famous as the other Ciutat Vella parts of Barri Gotic and Barri Raval, El Born is still by many considered to be the most charming of the three. While Barri Gotic and Barri Raval are seeing huge numbers of tourists every year, partly driven by surrounding the infamous Las Ramblas, Borne has retained a more authentic and local feel. El Borne is a very sought after neighborhood for the artistic and is a place of choice for artists, handicraft artist and musicians, giving the area a unique mix of bars, one-off boutiques, restaurants and street shows. Furthermore, El Borne has become a hub for great restaurants where Spanish masters show off their cuisine, like Carles Abellan’s Comerç24. Of the most noteworthy sights not to miss in El Borne is the Picasso Museum and The Museu de la Xocolate (chocolate musem). Also worth a visit is the Parc Ciutadella park which is located just next to El Born and famous for Barcelona’s zoo which is located inside. The park also features several medieval buildings which used to form part of a castle used to protect Barcelona. Since El Borne is located in the absolute center of Barcelona, just next to Transport hubs such as Plaça Catalunya and Plaça Urquinaona, guarantees excellent service by public transport.
